Prerequisites of Success in Teaching

“Ye are the stars of the heaven of understanding, the breeze that stirreth at the break of day, the soft-flowing waters upon which must depend the very life of all men, the letters inscribed upon His sacred scroll. With the utmost unity, and in a spirit of perfect fellowship, exert yourselves, that ye may be enabled to achieve that which beseemeth this Day of God. Centre your energies in the propagation of the Faith of God.”

Bahá’u’lláh, Gleanings, XCVI

“Immerse yourselves in the ocean of My words, that ye may unravel its secrets, and discover all the pearls of wisdom that lie hid in its depths. Take heed that ye do not vacillate in your determination to embrace the truth of this Cause - a Cause through which the potentialities of the might of God have been revealed, and His sovereignty established. With faces beaming with joy, hasten ye unto Him. This is the changeless Faith of God, eternal in the past, eternal in the future.”

Bahá’u’lláh, The Kitab-i-Aqdas, p.85

“Those who participate in such a campaign (teaching), whether in an organizing capacity, or as workers to whose care the execution of the task itself has been committed, must, as an essential preliminary to the discharge of their duties, thoroughly familiarize themselves with the various aspects of the history and teachings of their Faith. In their efforts to achieve this purpose they must (1) study for themselves, conscientiously and painstakingly, the literature of their Faith, (2) delve into its teachings, (3) assimilate its laws and principles, (4) ponder its admonitions, tenets and purposes, (5) commit to memory certain of its exhortations and prayers, (6) master the essentials of its administration, (7) and keep abreast of its current affairs and latest developments. They must strive to obtain, from sources that are authoritative and unbiased, (8) a sound knowledge of the history and tenets of Islam - the source and background of their Faith - and approach reverently and with a mind purged from preconceived ideas the study of the Qur’an which, apart from the sacred scriptures of the Babi and Baha’i Revelations, constitutes the only Book which can be regarded as an absolutely authenticated Repository of the Word of God. They must devote special attention to the (9) investigation of those institutions and circumstances that are directly connected with the origin and birth of their Faith, with the station claimed by its Forerunner, and with the laws revealed by its Author.”
