In the Tablets of Bahá’u’lláh it is written that one time His Holiness Jesus Christ was in the desert. It was dark. It started to rain heavily. His Holiness turned toward a cave. He saw that there were wild animals in the cave. Then He stood out in the rain. The droplets of rain were heavily falling upon His blessed head. He said: “O My God! Thou hast provided the birds with a nest and for the wild animals a cave and for the sheep a home, but Thou hast not created any haven for the Son of Man so that He may protect Himself from the rain. O Father! Thou seest that My bed is the dust; My food is the weeds; My lamp in the darkness is the light of the stars.” Then He said: “Who is richer than I? For what Thou hast withheld from the kings, the rulers, the learned philosophers, the wealthy, Thou hast bestowed upon Me. Who is, therefore, richer than I?”
In the holy Writings of Bahá’u’lláh there are certain accounts that are not recorded in the Evangel, and these apply to the life of Jesus Christ. These accounts are a testimony to the exalted character of Christ and the sublimity of His nature. I will tell you another story. It is said that one day Christ came to a village. The government had banned the villagers from accepting strangers into their homes, as theft had increased in that area. His Holiness came to the door of an old woman. The old woman’s conscience did not allow her to refuse Him. When she looked at the Beauty of His blessed countenance and noted the signs of greatness that were present in Him, she could not bring herself to decline His request. So, with utmost courtesy, she accepted Him. Then the old woman noticed the demeanour of His Holiness, and she saw that in His behaviour the signs of greatness were apparent. She came forward and kissed His blessed hands and said: “I have a son, and no one else in this world. This boy was sensible, very good, and hard working. We were living our lives happily. Now it has been sometime that he has become confused and depressed, and our home is now full of grief and sorrow. He works during the day, but when he comes home at night, he is bewildered. He cannot sleep. No matter how many times I ask him what the problem is, he does not reply”. Christ said: “Send him to Me.” After sunset, the boy arrived. His mother said: “O my son! This is a great Personage. If you have a problem, talk to Him about it.” The boy came and sat in the presence of Christ. He said: “Tell Me what is troubling you.” The boy said: “There is nothing troubling me.” Christ said: “Do not tell an untruth. You have an incurable problem. Tell Me. I am trustworthy; I will not divulge anyone’s secret, but keep it. Be sure that I will not divulge your secret.” The boy said: “I have a pain for which there is no cure.” Christ said: “Tell Me. I will cure it.” The boy said: “As it is incurable, there is no remedy for it.” Christ said: “Tell Me. I have the remedy.” The boy said: “For any pain?” Christ said: “Yes. For any pain.” The boy said: “I am ashamed to say it.” Christ said: “Tell Me. You are My son.” The boy hesitated for a moment, and said: “I cannot say it. It is out of the bounds of propriety.” Christ said: “I will forgive you.” Finally, the boy said: “In a town nearby, there is a king; and I have fallen in love with his daughter. My work is selling thorns. What more shall I say?” His Holiness said: “Be assured. God willing, I will enable you to reach your desire.”
In short, Jesus Christ provided the means for the boy, such that he went and married the girl. On the wedding night, when they entered the room of the girl, as soon as he saw the grand, ornate surroundings, he thought of something and said to himself: “This Person has achieved such a great thing for me. Why then has He not done it for Himself? So long as He was able to do it for me, He must have been able to do it for Himself. And despite His inner power, He still roams the desert, eats grass, sleeps on the dust, sits in the dark, and lives in abject poverty.” As soon as he thought of this, he said to the girl: “You stay here. I have something to do. I will go and come back.” He then went out into the desert in search of Christ. Eventually he found Him, and said: “O my Lord! You have not dealt with me justly.” Christ said: “Why not?” The boy said: “You wished for me something that You did not wish for Yourself. It must be that You have in Your possession a great thing, and that if what I wished for was good, then You would have provided it for yourself. Therefore, it is clear that You have something else that is greater than that. So You were not fair to me. You gave me something that You do not consider worthy.” Christ said: “You are right. Do you have the capacity and worthiness of this?” The boy said: “I hope so.” Christ said: “Are you able to leave all of what you possess?” He said: “Yes.” Christ said: “With Me is Divine guidance. That is greater than everything else. If you can, come with Me.” The boy followed Christ. When He came to the disciples, He said: “I had a treasure that was hidden in that village. Now I have saved that treasure. This treasure belongs to me. I brought it out of the ground and now I bequeath it to you”
